Last Thursday evening, anglers, beer lovers, and curious newcomers filled the communal tables at Shellring Ale Works for our highly anticipated ‘Taps & Ties’. This month’s theme: the iconic Tarpon Toad—and it did not disappoint.
Mason kicked things off by introducing the Tarpon Toad—a saltwater staple fly designed to tempt big fish, especially our
Tarpon in the Lowcountry. He began explaining two types of anti-fowl guards – and their uses – and then started the approachable Step‑by‑Step Demo.
Mason guided the group through the build:
- Hook & Thread –Starting with a stout 2/0 tarpon hook and 220 denier thread.
- Tail & Color – Purple barred zonker and marabou tail – with a single strand of Krystal Flash.
- Body Construction – Using a dubbing brush he demonstrated how to add profile without all the bulk.
- Eyes & Head – Finally, he finished the fly off with mono eyes to ensure the perfect sink rate.
Highlights from the Night

-
Beginners Thrived – Several first-timers deftly handled the vise. The hands-on learning vibe was contagious.
-
Color Chat – Conversation buzzed around how colors could be modified to achieve different results in new locales.
-
Community Vibe – Local anglers swapping tips and helping the newcomers is really what its all about.
Why Fly-Tying Nights Matter
These evenings are about the craft and the camaraderie. Participants didn’t just walk away with a few fresh flies, but also with new ideas, fresh techniques, and plenty of stories—all over pints of Shellring’s best.
