The Orvis School

The Orvis Lowcountry Saltwater Fishing School is hosted by Bay Street Outfitters and Anchorage 1770 Inn on historic grounds overlooking the Beaufort River in Beaufort, South Carolina. These pristine flats are home to abundant redfish and make a perfect setting to experience flats fishing from the bow of a flats boat.
This three-day Lowcountry Saltwater Fishing School adventure begins with instruction by our Orvis-endorsed guides. Expect to learn fly-casting techniques, tackle and fly selection, knots, hook setting, and fish fighting techniques. Learning the double haul will improve your casting skills for many future trips.
Day two and three will be spent on a flats boat (two anglers per skiff) fishing with an experienced Bay Street Outfitters captain in the backcountry of Port Royal Sound. Depending on the time of year and conditions, these trips focus on targeting redfish, sea trout, and cobia.
Tuition includes comprehensive instruction, guided fishing for two days, use of premium Orvis tackle, and lunches.

I highly recommend The Redfish School. I got way more than I was expecting due highly in part to the instructor, Capt. Tony Welch. The class is geared for intermediate to basic beginner saltwater fly fishing. Notebook, Orvis fly fishing book, pens, waters, tasty lunch, and gear all provided. Just bring your sunscreen and shades for when you practice casting outside. The class portion is inside in a fun space with AC which was great on a hot Lowcountry day. Topics include ecology of the area, gear info, fly info, locating redfish, fighting, hook setting, basic casting, and advanced double haul casting. My cast has never felt better after working with Tony. He just has a great way of explaining things so it makes sense.

Cooper Lammonds

The first day was the class which had really helped me with getting the technique down for casting.
I can’t stress enough how well and how thorough they were with teaching. You learn everything that there is to know about fly fishing from the rod and reels all the way to how to cast it and everything in between.

Captain Tony and his staff have a great shop, super friendly and they have all the bases covered. We’ve fished with Captains Zeke, Shannon and Tanner a bunch and had a great experience every time. I’d also highly recommend their monthly fly-tying night, catch that if you can, it’s all ways a great time!
